14 Sep 10 Simple Reminders That Can Boost Your Happiness Every Day
About ten years ago, I sat in a room in Glasgow, waiting nervously for an interview. On the wall there was a sign that read “People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be”. At the time I rolled my eyes in disagreement. Ten years on, and a lot of life experience (and reading) later, I view this statement very differently. On this topic, the research is fascinating and it’s not what most people think.
Happiness isn’t about having a perfect life. Happiness does have a lot to do with how we show up in the everyday moments. When it comes to happiness, here are 10 things it might be helpful to know:
It’s partly genetic. Research suggests 40%-50% of our ability to be happy is shaped by genetics. However, our choices, our habits and our mindset can make a huge difference. Of course life circumstances impact, but even in challenging circumstances we often have more influence than we realise.
Small things matter most. Whether it’s a walk, a nice coffee or a chat with a friend, everyday joys are often the ones that stick and add to our contentment and happiness the most.
Comparison steals happiness. It’s easy to scroll and measure our life against someone else’s. However, our path is our own. The more we focus on what’s true for each of us, the freer and lighter we will feel.
Gratitude, Gratitude, Gratitude. Even two minutes a day noticing what we’re thankful for can rewire our brains for more positivity.
Progress feels good. We don’t need it all figured out. Just taking one small step toward what matters to us lifts our energy and mood.
Rest isn’t lazy. A rested mind and body are more creative, calm and open to joy than a burnt-out one.
Relationships matter. Feeling connected, seen and supported is one of the strongest predictors of lasting happiness. Our relationships with partners, friends, family, kids, work colleagues etc. are all important.
Growth fuels happiness. Stretching ourselves, learning something new or daring to step out of our comfort zone brings confidence and pride, which contributes to long term happiness and contentment.
Happiness isn’t constant. No one feels happy all the time. Allowing space for the hard days makes the lighter ones feel even better.
It’s a practice. Just like physical fitness we achieve by going to the gym, happiness is built in small daily choices, not something we reach once and for all. It is a journey not a destination.
So, what’s the secret? Happiness isn’t waiting for us someday. It can be found right here and now in the middle of our messy, imperfect, very real and human lives.
